Angelica Guting, 12, who will be an eighth-grader at Thomas Russell Middle School this fall, competed in the USA Taekwondo Junior Olympics National Championships in Austin, Texas from June 30 to July 3.
She won the gold medal in the World Class Sparring, Female 12-13 Black Belt Middle Weight Division. Guting had to win three fights to clinch her division.
Guting has won gold in the national championships five years in a row. In order to go to the nationals, athletes have to place in the top four at one of six qualifiers in the country or place first in a state championship.
Guting won first place at the San Jose qualifer. This year there were more than 3,000 competitors at the nationals.
Guting will try to win a spot on the USA Taekwondo National Team in 2010, competing in the 14- to 17-year-old division.
Guting trains with Master Troy Garr at Garr Sport Taekwondo in San Jose. Garr trains several USA team members and was a USA team member in 1996.
