After a slow start, the Milpitas High School varsity football team got almost the entire roster in to the act in a 50-7 blowout victory Friday over Alameda High School. Alameda got on the board first, taking a 7-0 first quarter lead, before the Trojans responded with 50 unanswered points.
Despite racking up seven offensive touchdowns, no Trojan rushed, received or passed for more than 83 yards. Milpitas used 13 different ball carriers, and seven different players caught passes.
The Trojans scored their first four touchdowns on the ground. Junior tailback Ben Pomele, who had a game-high 45 rushing yards, got Milpitas on the board with a three-yard touchdown run. Pomele and junior Jonathan Fullbright each recorded two touchdown runs in helping Milpitas to a 43-7 halftime lead.
The Trojans used three quarterbacks in the game and junior Junior London threw two touchdown passes, to seniors Chris Albright Gerome Rogers.
"We got a chance to use a lot of our guys, and everybody kept producing the entire game," Head Coach Kelly King said. "And we were really hustling on defense. We played well."
The attention now shifts to Wilcox High School, who will host Milpitas tomorrow night (Oct. 3). The game will be the league opener for the Trojans in the always-competitive De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, as well as the team's first road game of the season.
Wilcox is traditionally a strong program, but has an 0-3 record this season. King was quick
"League games are sure to be tough, and our guys certainly know that," King said.
Wilcox High School is located at 3250 Monroe St. in Santa Clara. The junior varsity game begins at 5 p.m., with the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
