The Milpitas High School girls varsity volleyball team continued to play inconsistently, but managed to split two matches in its opening week of league competition in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. While the Trojans previously had trouble playing well for an entire match, the nature of their inconsistency changed slightly in league play: one great performance and one poor one, the team's coach said.
Milpitas began league play with an excellent showing at home last Tuesday against Monta Vista High School. The Trojans came from behind in the second and fourth games to win the match. Seniors Angela Farin and Megan Montelius led the team in kills with 18 and 13, respectively, and senior Vanessa Leija contributed 23 digs.
"We did a lot of good things that night," Head Coach Jeff Lamb said. "We hit well, we passed well, communicated well. And the nice thing was that we made those comebacks and played really well at the end of games after falling behind.
"We had a long discussion (last Monday) about communicating, keeping our emotions on an even level, and we were able to do all of that against Monta Vista."
In their game last Thursday against Cupertino High School, the Trojans seemed to have lost that message, and were soundly defeated in a three-game sweep.
Lamb said that the team's communication slacked, and that they allowed their opponent to go on long scoring runs.
