Milpitas High School's varsity football team pushed its record to 2-0 with a convincing 28-3 victory at home against Newark Memorial High School Friday.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Trojans opened the scoring on a 17-yard touchdown pass from junior Cameron Hernandez to senior Chris Albright early in the second period. Milpitas continued to move the ball well under senior quarterback Jacob Cuellar, who shares time with Hernandez as the Trojans' signal-caller.
Cuellar found junior tailback Ben Pomele for a 25-yard touchdown throw that helped Milpitas earn a 14-3 halftime lead.
Milpitas blew the game open in the third quarter on the strength of two big plays. Hernandez found Albright again, this time on a 50-yard touchdown strike. It was the fourth touchdown connection for the duo in the season's first two games, and their second from at least 50 yards. Head Coach Kelly King said he was pleased with the chemistry that had developed between Hernandez and Albright, and that he expects the two to continue to improve their timing as the season progresses.
Albright finished with four catches for 82 yards, while Hernandez threw for 113 yards and two touchdowns to go with one interception.
Not to be outdone, the defense essentially put the game out of reach when Milpitas senior defensive back Gerome Rogers intercepted a pass and returned it all the way to the Newark two-yard line. It was one of four turnovers caused by the Trojan defense. Senior Steven Fanua
Fanua also led the sturdy defense by racking up 18 tackles.
"We looked pretty good," King said. "We played better than we played in the first game. Both of our quarterbacks threw interceptions, and cutting back on turnovers is something we'll continue to work on."
Milpitas' next game is tomorrow night at home against Alameda High School. Despite Alameda's 0-3 record, the Trojans are not looking past their opponent.
"They beat us last year, and they've lost some games in the last minutes this year," King said. "It's going to be a good ballgame."
