Matthew B. Thompson

Sept. 13, 1951 - July 22, 2009

Matthew B. Thompson passed away peacefully at his home in Chico, Calif. on July 22, 2009. He held on to his humor and positive outlook as he fought a rare form of pancreatic cancer with grace.

He was born in Oakland. His family moved to Milpitas in 1955.

Except for a four-year period in Southern California he grew up here and attended Milpitas schools. He was on the tennis team and in the marching band at Samuel Ayer High School. After graduating in 1969, he attended San Jose State University and worked at RayChem and EcoLab in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties for many years.

He later followed his passion for cooking and trained as a chef at San Francisco Culinary Academy, working at restaurants in San Jose, Los Gatos and Palo Alto. In 2003 he and his family moved to Chico, where he built a pool and spa service business.

Mr. Thompson will be remembered by his many friends for his easy-going personality and his willingness to always give a helping hand. He did well at whatever he attempted, whether it involved science, cooking, gardening, car mechanics, electrical skills, equipment service and repair. Music was another of his passions and his tastes were diverse. He enjoyed rock, blues, country and reggae music and attended innumerable concerts over the years. His travels took him to South Asia, Great Britain and Costa Rica.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Thompson; his children, Laura

Thompson and Richard Thompson, all of Chico; his parents, Richard and Mary Haven Thompson of Milpitas; his sister, Melissa Thompson (Jacques) of Santa Cruz; his brother, Tristram Thompson (Ute and son Toryn) of Ben Lomond; and his aunt, Elizabeth Scoville of Denver, Colo. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Bronwen Thompson in June 2008.

A celebration of Mr. Thompson's life was held Aug. 23 at the family home in Chico. Donations in his memory can be sent to Enloe Hospice, 1390 E. Lassen Ave., Chico, Calif. 95973.
