Milpitas library schedules move
The Milpitas Community Library will close to the public starting Monday, Nov. 3, to move to its new location at 160 N. Main St. The move is expected to take approximately six weeks.
No library materials will be due during the closed time. Starting Oct. 14, due dates will be extended so that patrons can return their books to the new library and not accrue fines. Patrons are encouraged to check out as many books, compact discs, digital video discs and other materials as they will need during this period. Even though the materials will not be due during the library move, the book drop at the old library will be open until a book drop is available at the new location.
Patrons will still have access to the library's catalog and databases at www.santaclaracountylib.org.
The grand opening for the new library is scheduled Saturday, Jan. 10.
For more information, call the library at 262-1171, or check www.santaclaracountylib.org/milpitas.
"MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY" WORKSHOP
Successful author and "Make a Difference Day" Volunteer Coordinator Leah Facun will hold a community awareness workshop Saturday, Oct. 11 in Milpitas.
Facun will discuss discovering the "real you"; secrets of total wellness and survival; the secrets of the wealthy; and ways to make a difference for a healthy community.
The event will be held at 372 Turquoise St. in Milpitas, and begin at 1:30 p.m.
YMCA BOARDS MERGE
The boards
The YMCA of Silicon Valley will serve nearly 190,000 members from communities that span from Gilroy to Redwood City and from the Pacific Coast to the San Francisco Bay, making it one of the 15 largest YMCA associations and the fourth largest nonprofit in Silicon Valley.
TOP TEACHER
Paula Graham of Alexander Rose Elementary School was one of 30 teachers honored last month at the Santa Clara County Office of Education's annual Teacher Recognition Day as "Teachers of the Year." The ceremony at Heritage Theatre in Campbell was hosted by county Superintendent of Schools Charlie Weis, and President/CEO of Silicon Valley Leadership Group Carl Guardino.
GIRL SCOUTS HONORED BY ADOPTION AGENCY
Milpitas Girl Scout Troop 61192 was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award last month by Bay Area Adoption Services. The girls and their troop leaders have assisted Kathleen O'Connell at the annual BAAS picnic for the last six years. The picnic brings together families that have adopted children into their homes from 85 different countries.
The girls' expertise in running the kitchen and involving the children in carnival games will be greatly missed, organizers said. While the girls have been involved for six years, troop member Lianna Mah and leader Candy Mah have been attending for 18 years. Lianna was only 4 months old at her first picnic and had arrived from Peru a month before the picnic. BAAS is an international adoption agency located in Mountain View.
