More than 115 volunteers braved the rain Saturday morning to participate in a beautification project at John Sinnott Elementary School. Volunteers included Boy Scout troops; students from Milpitas High School; students, parents and teachers from Sinnott; staff from City of Milpitas; and employees of trash and recyclables hauler Allied Waste, which sponsored the event.

"It was such a great showing from the community. It was unbelievable," Jeanne Mader of Allied Waste said. "There were lines of people at the registration table. We were close to being done with all our work by 10:30 (a.m.), so we added extra projects because we had so many volunteers."

Projects completed included sodding the school's 4,000-square-foot courtyard; putting mulch in the flower beds; planting more than 50 plants; applying wood chips called Fibar to both playgrounds; and cleaning the entire perimeter fenceline.
