Former Milpitas High School basketball standout Julian Conyers played 21 minutes in the opening round game of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball Championship Tourna-ment. Conyers is a starter for the team from Coppin State Uni-versity in Maryland, and a 2003 graduate of Milpitas High. He later transferred to Coppin State from San Jose City College.

Coppin State completed an improbable run to win its conference tournament, becoming the first team to reach the NCAA Tournament with 20 losses. The team began the season with a record of 4-19, before rallying to win 12 of its final 13 games.

"It's been a great experience to go through with my team," Conyers said. "We faced a lot of adversity, but it feels really good to come on at the end of the season and earn our way into the tournament."

The Eagles were defeated by Mount St. Mary's 69-60 in the opening game Tuesday. Conyers, a small forward, had eight points, two rebounds and a blocked shot. If Coppin had won, they would have next faced the No. 1 team in the nation, North Carolina University.
