The following letter was posted on milpitaspost.com, in response to reader June Edwards' letter earlier this month about where to properly dispose of American flags.

Dear Editor,

Thanks June for bringing attention to retiring U.S. flag protocol. Every year at our Camporee at the end of May, Girl Scout Unit 620 of Milpitas retires old tattered flags.

We do a ceremony with a poem and moment of silence as the flags are gently placed upon the fire circle at Skylark Girl Scout Camp.

It is amazing to watch how a camp full of almost 200 Girl Scouts stands in silence and holds respect for this ceremony.

We would gladly accept any U.S. flags from the community that are in need of retiring. I'm sure the Boy Scouts would do this as well.
