MHS Spirit Week
As part of Milpitas High School's Spirit Week, on Thursday, Oct. 16, residents will have an opportunity to get fired up for the Friday homecoming football game during the "Remember the Titans" Movie Night on the Green at 7 p.m. on campus. The showing is free. Residents will be able to meet the Milpitas High football teams.
An Alumni Tailgate will be held Friday, Oct. 17 from 5-7 p.m. in front of Milpitas High gymnasium. $12 rib platters will be for sale (ribs, salad, corn, drink, free raffle ticket). Pictures of students over the years, yearbooks, and photo albums will be available.
The Homecoming Football Game will begin Oct. 17 with former band member and football player recognitions from 7-7:20 p.m., followed by the national anthem sung by Manuel Romero at 7:20 p.m. The varsity football game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The halftime show will include the Milpitas High Marching Band and Spirit Squad. Former king and queen Nick Van Damme and Catherine Li will return to crown the 2008 homecoming king and queen.
Camera club meets
The Milpitas Camera Club will be holding its next meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Milpitas Police Community Room, 1275 N. Milpitas Blvd., at 7 p.m. All interested photography enthusiasts are welcomed to attend. This month's meeting will feature a presentation on "geotagging" your images. Fil-Am fundraiser
Comedian Rex Navarrete will highlight an evening of "Fun and Fashion" as the Filipino American Real Estate Professional Association presents a gala fundraiser for Gawad Kalinga at Club Motif, 389 S. First St. in San Jose on Oct. 8. In addition to Navarrete's comedic stylings, the fashion show will feature creations from well-known designers. Tickets are $65 per person and $500 per table. Free tutoring
Milpitas Unified School District is offering free tutoring to students in grades one through six attending Robert Randall Elementary School. Students must participate in the free and reduced meal program. The tutoring is offered before or after school, or on weekends. New courses

Better Breathers Club
On the last Monday of the month, Breathe California hosts the Better Breathers Club, a support group for people suffering from lung disease and their family members. Guest speakers from various health disciplines share their expertise with the group, in an effort to help participants breathe easier and lead a higher quality of life. The group also offers an open forum to discuss common concerns related to their lung disease. The next meeting is Monday, Oct. 27 from 1:30-3 p.m. at 1469 Park Ave., San Jose "Health Resources and Relaxation Practices for Managing Stress" by Ellen DiNuccci, Stanford University Cancer Clinical Trials recruitment specialist, will be the topic. Knights fundraiser
The Knights of Columbus in Milpitas will conduct their annual fundraiser drive to raise money to benefit the Milpitas High School special education program. The drive will be held Friday through Sunday, Oct. 17-19.
The Knights of Columbus are urging citizens everywhere to support this fundraising by making a donation. The Milpitas drive will be coordinated by the St. Elizabeth Council No. 8747. Those wishing to learn how they can help the drive can contact drive chairman Gwan Alisantosa at 263-4638.

Pandit Jasraj at ICC
The India Community Center in Milpitas, in collaboration with Bay Area Performing Arts, is proud to celebrate Indian culture and heritage with Padmavibhushan Pandit Jasraj. MUSD hearing
In accordance with Education Code 60119, Milpitas Unified School District will hold a public hearing to discuss the availability of books and instructional materials for kindergarten through grade 12 students in the board room of the district office, located at 1331 E. Calaveras Blvd. in Milpitas. The hearing will be held during the Oct. 14 Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m.
East Valley Artists
The East Valley Artists organization will hold its annual art show on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Foothill Presbyterian Church at 5301 McKee Road in San Jose. The public is invited to view local fine art offered for sale. Lions speech contest
The Milpitas Host Lions Club announces its next Speakers Contest, which will begin a series of contests starting in February 2009. The subject is "Water, Will California Be Left High and Dry?" All students in grades nine through 12 may enter. Prizes are substantial, and students can earn up to $20,000 in scholarship money.
The speech must be between five and 10 minutes. Milpitas Host Lions Club encourages all high school students to consider entering the contest and begin preparing their speeches. For more information, contact Milpitas Host Lions President Irene Whiteside at 469-1991.
Principal to be honored
Judy Morasci, founder and longtime principal of Milpitas Christian School, will be honored by her friends and colleagues in "A Celebration of Ministry" on Friday, Nov. 7. Vision Literacy orientation
Vision Literacy, a service of the Santa Clara County Library, provides adults in Santa Clara County with free literacy services. A nationally recognized non-profit organization, Vision Literacy trains volunteer tutors to help adults with reading, writing, and basic math skills.
Vision Literacy is offering volunteer orientations that provide a brief overview of core projects and the populations served. This informational session enables potential volunteers to better understand Vision Literacy's services, discuss expectations of tutor training, and allow for a direct question and answer period. After completing orientation, interested volunteers are welcome to register for tutor training or explore other volunteer opportunities.

Child advocates needed
Child Advocates of Silicon Valley is seeking caring adults, 21 and older, to become friends, mentors and advocates for children in the foster care system that have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley seeks center and home care volunteers to care for injured and orphaned wildlife for release back to the wild.
